Let’s take look at DeNoise AI as we challenge it with grainy scans of several 30-year-old 35mm color negatives! We’ll look at the results from each of the three processing modes (DeNoise AI, AI Clear and Low Light).

(Keep in mind that Topaz may intend DeNoise to be used mainly for digital images, but here on the Plugs ‘n Pixels blog we like to push the software hard! You can open any of these screenshots in a new tab or window to view at 100%.)

First, the DeNoise AI mode as applied to an interior shot of a historical Southern US mansion. The result almost looks as if it were shot on medium format film!

Next, AI Clear mode (which is my favorite option and seems to work well with many types of images). This shot is of the east coast of Florida from a commercial jet, through the dirty window. There’s no sand on the surface of the ocean so it shouldn’t look like that in the photo! Even the beach got cleaned up, and detail was restored to the various buildings:

Another example of AI Clear mode is this photograph of a Colonial-era reenactment actor. The original is a mess but the processed results are quite smooth:

Finally, we explore Low Light mode with this shot of a disco ball in some darkened dance hall. Not only is the noise cleaned up, the mirror ball get a bit of sharpness restored:

It’s easy to experiment with the different modes as well as both Auto and manual settings to get the best results out of any particular image.
