I find the Topaz apps especially useful for salvaging my older images (film scans from the ’70s-’90s), early lo-res digital from the past 20 years and more recent severely cropped iPhone images. Here are some examples:
Using an earlier version of Topaz Photo to Sharpen this very soft Halloween image:
Using the current version of Topaz Photo to completely denoise this grainy 1990’s film scan while retaining sharpness:
Topaz Gigapixel is fantastic for restoring detail in even 1-megapixel digital photos, such as this one from 25 years ago:
One thing I really enjoy doing with Gigapixel’s Redefine>Creative model is performing what I call “extreme enhancements” on severe crops from purposely-shot distant iPhone scenics. Below are a few examples. Of course the enhancement goes beyond straight upscaling but that is an intentional part of this artistic exercise (you can vary the strength of Redefine’s application as desired, or use the Realistic model).
The original parking lot image with a mountain scenic trying to appear in the far distance:
The enlargement and enhancement of a small crop from the full image:
Another unsuspecting scenic shot purposely on the gas line, not worrying about using a 600mm lens:
This is one of my favorite “radical scenics”, worthy of a wall hanging. I didn’t notice the birds initially but they really make the image:
Be sure to take advantage of this sudden Topaz sale, either to renew your subscription or to join the party for the first time! Your many challenging images are waiting to be restored and shared.
